Orange Poppy Seed Scone Recipe



The orange poppy seed scone recipe has a zesty citrus taste. Great for an anytime of the day snack!

Ingredients
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup poppy seeds
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, chilled
1/4 cup orange juice
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel

Egg Wash:
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon water

Hardware
Whisk
Large bowl
2 x small bowls
Pastry blender (optional) Pastry brush
Cookie sheet

Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 2: Lightly grease a 10-inch diameter circle in center of cookie sheet; set aside.
Step 3: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, poppy seeds, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.
Step 4: With a pastry blender or knife cut in chilled butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 5: In a small bowl, stir together the orange juice, egg, and grated orange peel.
Step 6: Pour juice mixture into flour mixture and stir to combine.
Step 7: With lightly floured hands, pat dough into an 9-inch diameter circle in center of prepared cookie sheet.
Step 8: In a small bowl, stir together egg and 1/2 teaspoon water. Lightly brush egg mixture over the top of scones.
Step 9: With a serrated knife cut circle into 8 wedges.
Step 10: Bake 20-25 minutes or until set and lightly browned. Do not overbake. Re-cut wedges with knife. Let scones stand for 3 minutes before transferring to cooling surface.
