Mother Lode Brownie Recipe
You've struck it rich with the Mother Lode brownie recipe. A rich, chewy goldmine of a brownie, overflowing with toppings.
Ingredients
Brownie Layer:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate
3 ounces semi-sweet chocolate
1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups(packed)light brown sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Caramel Layer:
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons water
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream, scalded
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Toppings:
1 cup coarsly chopped macadamia nuts
9 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips (about 1 1/2 cups)
6 ounces of any chip your heart desires (about 1 cup)

Step 1: Grease and flour 9x9 inch baking pan.
Step 2: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Step 3: Make Brownie layer: in a medium bowl whisk together flour and baking soda.
Step 4: In a microwave safe dish melt the unsweetened chocolate, with the butter. Stir until smooth and set aside to cool.
Step 5: In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat the brown sugar and eggs into a grainy paste.
Step 6: Beat in the cooled chocolate mixture and vanilla.
Step 7: Gradually beat in flour mixture.
Step 8: Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until center is set but moist.
Step 9: Cool in the pan on wire rack.
Prepare the caramel layer:
Step 1: In a small sauce pan, dissolve the sugar in the water over low heat, stirring constantly.
Step 2: Bring mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, let boil without stirring until syrup turns an amber color. Wiping down sides periodically with pastry brush so crystals do not form.
Step 3: Remove the pan from heat, then stir in the hot cream (caution, mixture will bubble rapidly) continue stirring until the caramel is dissolved into the cream.
Step 4: Stir in butter until smooth, set aside to cool slightly.
Assemble caramel layer and toppings:
Step 1: preheat oven to 325 degrees F (163 degrees C).
Step 2: Spread caramel layer over cooled brownies.
Step 3:Sprinkle the toppings over the caramel.
Step 4: Bake 5 minutes in oven to set the toppings (do not let chocolate chips melt completely).
Step 5: set on wire rack to cool, then cut into squares.
