Gingerbread Boys Cookie Recipe

This gingerbread boys cookie recipe has been a long standing holiday tradition. If they are not devoured immediately, we often hang some on the tree as ornaments.
Ingredients
1 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 cup molasses
2 tablespoons white vinegar
5 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
Toppings:
Squeeze icing tubes
Red hots candies
Sugar sprinkles
Hardware
Whisk
Large bowl
Medium bowl
Cookie sheets
Gingerbread cookie cutter
Rolling pin
Plastic wrap
Mixer
Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves; set aside.
Step 2: In a large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar with electric mixer.
Step 3: Beat in molasses, egg, and vinegar.
Step 4: Gradually mix in flour mixture until combined.
Step 5: Separate dough into 2 balls, flatten into disks and wrap with plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour.
Step 6: Remove dough from refrigerator and preheat Oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 7: Lightly grease cookie sheets; set aside.
Step 8: On a floured surface with floured rolling pin, roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
Step 9: With cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place 1 inch apart on prepared cookie sheet.
Note: If making into ornaments, use a toothpick to open a small hole 1/4 inch down from the top of each head or shape.
Step 10: Bake 8-10 minutes. Transfer to cooling surface.
Step 11: When cookies are cool top with desired decoration, or string ribbon through prepared holes for ornaments.
Makes about 24 cookies.
